The Southern Hills Career and Technical Center, in partnership with the Warren County Career Center, hosted an award ceremony for the ten graduates of the Adult Law Academy on June 24th.
Students started the academy last August and following a strict schedule of classwork and hands-on training, students finished their education in May. Upon completion of the course, the students traveled to London, Ohio to take the Ohio Peace Officer Training Association exam, and these ten students successfully passed the state examination.
The Law Academy has long been part of the adult education division of the Southern Hills Careers and Technology Center. Over the years, many adults have completed the 600+ hour program, an OPOTA (Ohio Peace Officers Training Association) certified course. The course covers topics such as interview and questioning techniques, physical conditioning, detention laws, first aid, crime prevention, defensive and pursuit drives, understanding cultural differences, evidence collection techniques, radio communications techniques, reporting, crime scene search, traffic accident investigation, search and seizure, Crisis Intervention, Firearms, and Drug Laws in Ohio.
Around 75 people attended the award ceremony in honor of the graduates. The ceremony began with a greeting from Southern Hills Superintendent Kevin Kratzer. Class president Bradley Rhodes led the pledge of allegiance and spoke briefly with the class. Guest speaker, Brown County Attorney Jessica Little, addressed the class, and Commander Kurt Beckham awarded certificates of completion and special awards.
The highest academic award was given to Karen Manning, who received the highest score in the class on the state examination and also received the highest gun award for the highest score on the shooting range. Little did the cadets’ mock swearing in. The ceremony ended with a congratulatory graduation from the Director of Adult Education, Vicki Carrington.
The Law Academy takes place at the Southern Hills Career and Technical Center on the corner of US 68 and Hamer Road in Georgetown. The next academy starts on September 10th.
